Catalonia is the most cyber-attacked region in Spain

In recent years, cybercrime has emerged as a significant issue in Spain, affecting individuals and corporations alike, as data compiled in 2022 by Statista reveals.

Catalonia experienced the highest number of cybercrime victimizations in Spain in 2019, with nearly 35.000 cases. The Spanish capital, Madrid, follows closely behind with almost 30.000 cases as of the same year.

Delving deeper into the demographics affected by cybercrime, the age group of those aged 26 to 40 years old registered the highest number of cybercrime victimizations in 2019, with almost 53.000 cases. This statistic highlights the vulnerability of young adults, who often rely more on digital platforms for communication, work, and entertainment.

Stay safe from identity theft

Among the various forms of cybercrime, identity theft is of particular concern, as it can affect victims for a longer period of time. This type of cybercrime can have severe consequences, including financial loss, damage to reputation, and emotional distress.

6% of respondents in a Statista survey reported having suffered from identity theft in 2019.

To protect yourself from digital identity theft, consider the following tips:

  1. Use strong, unique passwords for all your online accounts and enable two-factor authentication where available.
  2. Be cautious when sharing personal information online, particularly on social media platforms.
  3. Keep your devices and software updated with the latest security patches.
  4. Be wary of phishing emails and messages that attempt to trick you into revealing sensitive information or downloading malicious files.
  5. Regularly check your digital footprint and monitor your online exposed information.

Most of the time, personal information ends on the Internet because of a data breach suffered by a company storing it. Victims become aware of the incident when suspicious activity occurs in their online accounts or, worse, they experience financial fraud.

Were you involved in a data breach? Find out now!

With Bitdefender Digital Identity Protection, you can instantly check if your personal information leaked in a recent (or old) breach, what information was exposed, and how risky this is for you. It scours the Internet (also the Dark web) for bits and pieces of information and tracks them back to you.

Bitdefender Digital Identity shows you:

-    The breaches and data collector that exposed your information. It only needs your email address and phone number to crawl data leaked.

-    Your digital footprint and risk map – what the Internet knows about you and how risky it is for your privacy and safety

-    The steps to take for each of your accounts involved in a data breach to minimize the danger of identity theft and financial losses.
