Intel Confirms 12th Gen UEFI Source Code Leak

Intel has confirmed the proprietary UEFI source code for the 12th Gen Intel processor has been leaked online and spread across the internet via 4chan and Github.

Intel’s is not the only source code leaked in 2022. If anything, more companies have been affected in 2022 than in recent years from hacks and employee negligence. As for Intel, it's still too late to tell whether the culprit is a hacker or simple carelessness.

According to Toms Hardware, the first to report that a 6GB file containing tools and code for building and optimizing BIOS/UEFI images hit the Internet, Intel has finally acknowledged the incident.

"Our proprietary UEFI code appears to have been leaked by a third party," saidan Intel spokesperson. "We do not believe this exposes any new security vulnerabilities as we do not rely on obfuscation of information as a security measure."

"This code is covered under our bug bounty program within the Project Circuit Breaker campaign, and we encourage any researchers who may identify potential vulnerabilities to bring them to our attention through this program. We are reaching out to both customers and the security research community to keep them informed of this situation," the spokesman added.

Intel said nothing about how the code got out, but they are encouraging security researchers to make use of the Project Circuit Breaker bug bounty program and report any vulnerability or exploits they might happen to stumble upon.

With the source code out in the wild, it remains to be seen what hackers, security researchers and other interested parties do with it. The company is also preparing to release the new 13th Gen, which means they'll have their hands full for the foreseeable future.
