Hundreds of millions of Brazilians were allegedly put at risk when a massive leak left their private data publicly accessible.
The private data of Brazilian individuals was reportedly leaked in a “publicly accessible Elasticsearch instance,” a tool often used for managing and analyzing large data blocks.
According to Cybernews researchers, the data lacked any indicators that could link it to a specific organization or company, making it impossible to pinpoint the origin of the leak.
“The cluster, located on a cloud server, contained the data with full names, dates of birth, sex, and Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas (CPF) numbers,” Cybernews said. “This 11-digit number identifies individual taxpayers in Brazil. The leaked data contained more than 223 million records, which implies that the entire Brazilian population might be affected by the leak.”
As the researchers point out, the data is no longer accessible. However, even if the leak has been plugged, threat actors might have saved some of the leaked documents for future operations, such as fraud, targeted cybercrimes, and identity theft.
Leaked or stolen private data are often used as a catalyst in devastating cyberattacks. Most of the time, these nefarious incidents hit like a scattergun - harming the primary target of the attack and dealing collateral damage to the individuals unwillingly participating with their stolen data.
The importance of safeguarding one’s personal details cannot be stressed enough as data breaches skyrocket in both scale and frequency. Good online hygiene, caution when sharing private details on online platforms, and awareness of your digital footprint can go a long way.
Unfortunately, data breaches are unpredictable and outside the control of individuals, organizations, and other vulnerable entities. In other words, sometimes they thwart even the best efforts to prevent them, leaving victims to deal with the fallout.
Dedicated tools like Bitdefender Digital Identity Protection can help keep your identity safe from the influx of data breaches. It continuously scans the public and Dark Web for unauthorized personal data leaks, monitors your accounts, and lets you instantly plug any holes in your digital footprint.
