As of July 1, 2021, Bitdefender BOX v.1 has reached its End of Life (EOL). After this date, Bitdefender ceased providing firmware updates and technical support for the first-generation Bitdefender BOX.
Overview
Bitdefender is committed to delivering innovative, effective security solutions to its customers. As platforms evolve, so do our products and technologies. As a result, Bitdefender continuously develops and shapes its solution set. The resulting new solutions and feature modifications often lead to a need to discontinue older hardware, software revisions, and product features. This End of Life (EOL) process is an essential part of the lifecycle for security products.
Bitdefender BOX v.1, released in 2015 as a consumer cybersecurity hub to protect the Internet of Things (IoT) in homes, is officially discontinued as of July 1, 2021. After this date, the device retained its router functionalities but no longer received updates, including security fixes.
Bitdefender BOX v.1 – End of Life Milestones
The Bitdefender EOL process begins with the End of Life announcement and involves the following major milestones:
- End of Life: July 1, 2021. The last date that Bitdefender issues releases or bug fixes for a Bitdefender BOX v.1 device. After this date, we no longer develop, repair, maintain, or test new software or hardware versions for this cybersecurity hub.
- End of Support: July 1, 2021. The last date customers can receive service and support for a Bitdefender BOX v.1. Typically, this is the same date as the End of Life announcement.
Impact on Existing Customers
The first-generation Bitdefender BOX played a significant role in helping users protect their IoT home devices and secure their networks. However, as technology advanced and with the introduction of the second-generation Bitdefender BOX, the original device became outdated. Our focus shifted towards enhancing the current solution portfolio.
With the End of Life phase, firmware updates for Bitdefender BOX v.1 ceased. The device continued to protect networks using the virus signatures it had already downloaded. Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices remained protected through the Total Security product installed alongside Bitdefender BOX. Users could renew the Total Security solution as needed.
Partial support for Bitdefender BOX v.1 continued until July 1, 2021. After this date, the hub also reached End of Support.
Customers with a functional Bitdefender BOX could still access its security features, as long as they chose to use their existing Bitdefender hardware. However, these features were no longer officially supported beyond July 1, 2021.
At the conclusion of the EOL process, Bitdefender discontinued the means for users to update or renew subscriptions for the discontinued hub and made any online materials related to the product unavailable.
At any point, users may choose to renew their Bitdefender Total Security, a substitute solution that offers the best anti-malware protection against e-threats across all major operating systems.
