The Green Bay Packers are warning fans of a serious data breach involving their official online retail store.
According to a message to customers, threat actors infiltrated the website late last year, injecting a malicious card skimmer script designed to steal customers' personal and payment information during transactions on packersproshop.com.
“On October 23, 2024, we were alerted to the presence of malicious code inserted on the Pro Shop website by a third party threat actor,” the notice reads. “Immediately upon learning this, we temporarily disabled all payment and checkout capabilities on the Pro Shop website and began an investigation.”
The full extent of the breach, including the number of customers affected, remains under investigation.
Card skimming attacks like the one targeting the Packers Pro Shop involve malicious scripts secretly embedded into e-commerce websites that can remain undetected for months, placing customers at great risk. These scripts intercept and capture payment details such as credit card numbers, billing addresses, and other sensitive information that customers enter during the checkout process.
What type of information was involved?
In the case of the Packers, fans shopping for merchandise on the compromised platform may have unwittingly given cybercriminals the information they entered upon purchase, including:
Customers who shopped on the Pro Shop website using a gift card, Pro Shop website account, Paypal, or Amazon Pay were not impacted.
What can you do to stay safe?
If you’ve shopped on packersproshop.com recently, it’s crucial to take immediate steps to protect yourself:
1. Enroll in the complimentary credit monitoring service as mentioned in the data breach notification letter.
2. Contact your bank or credit card issuer to cancel your credit card and get a new one.
3. Keep an eye on your credit card and bank statements for unauthorized transactions.
6. Immediately report any fraudulent activity or identity theft to your bank or other financial institution, your state attorney general, and the FTC.
