Apex Legends developer Respawn has patched the vulnerability used by a hacker during an online competition that let hit forcibly deploy cheating software on players' systems.
During the Apex Legends Global Series competition, a couple of players reported that they suddenly could see enemies through the walls and had perfect aim. Since those players were also streaming at the time, it was easy to see that they didn't have anything to do with the incident.
The initial speculation was that the anti-cheating software used by Apex Legends and numerous other games might have a vulnerability that allowed the hacker to take action. The developers of Easy Anti-Cheat, the software in question, quickly stated that it was not their software's fault.
On the other hand, Respawn acknowledged that something happened during the tournament and issued a patch, although they didn't say anything else.
"On Sunday, a few professional Apex Legends player accounts were hacked during an ALGS event," said the company on Twitter. "Game and player security are our highest priorities, which is why we paused the competition to address the issue immediately. Our teams have deployed the first of a layered series of updates to protect the Apex Legends player community and create a secure experience for everyone."
The company pushed another security update a few days later, but the details were still lacking.
"Today, we've added another update that is intended to further protect our players and ensure the competitive integrity of Apex Legends," said the company on X.
It turned out that a hacker was behind that incident, and he confessed of using an unknown vulnerability in the game itself but didn't elaborate. In fact, he said that it was all just for "fun."
A month later, the same hacker said that the vulnerability Respawn had fixed the vulnerability after he tested it again, according to a TechCrunch report.
