AWS failure causes internet crisis

The internet stopped working on Tuesday and multiple major websites shut down after Amazon Web Services S3 suffered massive errors at their Northern Virginia facility, where most of their servers are kept, according to Gizmodo.

“We continue to experience high error rates with S3 in US-EAST-1, which is impacting various AWS services. We are working hard at repairing S3, believe we understand root cause, and are working on implementing what we believe will remediate the issue,” Amazon initially announced.

After that, the issue was detected and fixed.

“We”ve identified the issue as high error rates with S3 in US-EAST-1, which is also impacting applications and services dependent on S3.”

Although “designed to deliver 99.999999999 percent durability” and “99.99 percent availability of objects over a given year,” Amazon S3 malfunctioned. Its failure caused the outage of a high number of companies, including Gizmondo Media, Medium, Quora, Trello and Slack. The failure also affected some IoT devices.

For more than a decade, Amazon Web Services has been the market leader, and it still accounts for 31 percent of the market, Gartner says. Stocks keep going up, so no wonder the errors caused a high number of outages for cloud-based apps. Amazon pretty much monopolized the industry until Google, Microsoft and IBM turned into serious competitors in the cloud computing and storage market.
