Thai and Singaporean authorities have arrested a person suspected of at least 75 hacks worldwide, mostly in the Asia-Pacific region since 2021.
Unfortunately, data breaches have become much more common than they were only 10 or 15 years ago. People lose private information all the time, but the hackers are rarely identified. In many situations, these groups operate outside of normal jurisdictions, making it very difficult to apprehend.
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) and the Royal Thai Police (RTP) collaborated for the arrest of a 39-year-old man on Feb. 26 in Thailand.
The initial investigation started back in 2020 after 11 separate reports were filed in Singapore. A hacker going by many names, including ALTDOS”, “DESORDEN”, “GHOSTR” and “0mid16B” was breaching security, stealing data and asking for ransom.
“The investigations revealed that these multiple aliases were likely to be connected to the same threat actor who was responsible for at least 75 cases internationally,” said the investigators. “The threat actor is suspected to have exploited vulnerabilities in the victims’ networks before stealing the victims’ data. The threat actor is also suspected to have published the stolen data for sale online when victims failed to pay the ransom demanded.”
Interestingly, the authorities provide no information about the suspect except his age. They also didn’t say if he was working alone or part of a group. The authorities also confiscated various assets, including laptops, mobile phones, luxury vehicles, and branded bags, all totaling around $300,000.
If found guilty, this particular hacker could be held responsible for stealing the data of millions of people worldwide and leaking the private information of millions of victims worldwide.
