Cybercrooks have hijacked the official X (formerly Twitter) account of popular Solana-based meme coin generator Pump.fun to promote a fraudulent governance token called "PUMP."
On Feb. 26, Pump.fun’s official X account (@pumpdotfun) was compromised, with hackers posting a misleading announcement about an official governance token for the platform. The fraudulent post read:
"Introducing $PUMP the OFFICIAL pump.fun GOVERNANCE token, where Democracy has never been this degen. We will also be REWARDING our OG DEGENS."
The post was crafted to exploit the platform’s user base, including many fans drawn to high-risk, high-reward crypto plays. By claiming to reward early adopters, the scammers aimed to lure users into investing in a non-existent token.
Shortly after the initial scam post, the hackers escalated their efforts by promoting yet another fake token, called "GPT-4.5." while also threatening to delete the Pump.fun X account if the token reached a $100 million market cap, further adding to the chaos and confusion among users.
Pump.fun quickly acknowledged the breach on its Telegram channel, urging users not to engage with the compromised X account. A staff member posted the following message:
"Our X account is compromised. Do not interact with it. We are investigating."
The platform is currently investigating the breach, though how the hackers gained access remains unclear. The fraudulent posts have since been removed, but it is unknown whether Pump.fun has regained full control over its account.
Pump.fun users should remain cautious and avoid interacting with suspicious posts or links related to "PUMP" or "GPT-4.5” while also enabling additional security measures on their social media and cryptocurrency accounts.
