Several International Monetary Fund Email Accounts Compromised in Cyberattack

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) revealed that unknown hackers compromised the email accounts of 11 of its employees, but it doesn't seem the leadership was actually targeted in the attack.

The IMF is likely one of the most sought-after organizations when it comes to cyberattacks. Fortunately, the organization has managed to remain relatively unscathed in the past decade, and even this recent cyberattack wasn't as damaging as it could have been.

The IMF revealed that it was the target of an attack on February 16, 2024, and 11 email accounts were compromised. The investigation continues, but from the looks of it, the attackers could not go any further.

"A subsequent investigation, with the assistance of independent cybersecurity experts, determined the nature of the breach, and remediation actions were taken," said the IMF in a press release.

"The investigation determined that eleven (11) IMF email accounts were compromised. The impacted email accounts were re-secured. We have no indication of further compromise beyond these email accounts at this point in time. The investigation into this incident is continuing."

Interestingly, a spokesperson specifically mentioned to Reuters that the leadership was not the target of this attack.

"The MD and her top leadership team were not targeted," the spokesperson explained, and assured everyone that IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and other top officials are not among the victims.

The IMF didn't specify what kind of information was accessed by the attackers or how long they spent in the infrastructure, but this will likely be revealed after the investigation is completed.
