Staying Ahead of Scammers: Key Insights from the Latest BBB Scam Tracker Risk Report

According to the 2024 BBB Scam Tracker Risk Report, scammers are growing more sophisticated every year. Financial grooming scams in particular are a rising threat, with fraudsters taking time to build trust and emotional connections, sometimes over days, weeks, or even months, before moving in for the con.

Financial Grooming: A New Breed of High-Dollar Scams

The 2024 BBB Scam Tracker Risk Report emphasizes the riskiest types of scams targeting consumers, particularly investment scams involving cryptocurrency. Alarmingly, over 80% of people who encountered an investment/cryptocurrency scam reported a financial loss, with a median loss of $5,000, the second highest among all scam types.

Romance/friendship scams climbed to the third-riskiest spot in 2024, while featuring the highest median dollar loss of $6,099 per victim. Both scam types rely on financial grooming, where scammers take time to establish a sense of trust or an emotional bond before asking for money. These scams always start small, but once trust is established, the scammer coaxes the victim to invest more, often in fake cryptocurrency platforms.

Other Key Findings from the BBB

  • Median dollar losses due to scams have increased.  The overall reported median dollar loss rose by 30% from 2023 to 2024, even though the percentage of people who lost money after encountering a scam fell by 14.6%.
  • Employment scams remain prevalent. Still at number two, employment scams account for 14% of all reported scams on the BBB’s Scam Tracker, with a median loss of $1,500. Younger adults (18–34) are particularly vulnerable, lured by flexible work-from-home “opportunities.”
