Chrome users trying to access tech news hub The Verge on Saturday were met with a security warning claiming it contains content from SBNation.com, a suspected malware distribution site, reports cnet.
“Google has found malicious software may be installed onto your computer if you proceed. If you`ve visited this site in the past or you trust this site, it`s possible that it has just recently been compromised by a hacker,” read the standard warning message.
Joshua Topolsky, editor in chief of The Verge, took to Twitter to set the record straight right away. “Hey guys we`re aware of the malware warning (which is completely incorrect). Site is safe and we`re working with Google to fix the issue,” tweeted Topolsky.
Compromise may occur without the webmaster being immediately aware of it, and thousands of such warnings are sent out every day, so the matter is still to be clarified. Comments on the cnet article do, however, point to several possible causes of this incident, including malware-laden banner ads and forum content.
