North Korea may be on the brink of declaring war, but guerrilla operations have already started in cyber-space. Hacktivists supposedly affiliated with Anonymous seized control of the Twitter and Flickr accounts of the North Korean propaganda news agency and started posting criticism of leader Kim Jong-un.
As North Korea has hardly any presence on the Internet, the Twitter and Flickr accounts set up by Uriminzokkiri (the “Our Nation” news agency) are two of the most prominent means of communication between the communist state and the rest of the world.
According to the Washington Post, the attacks were complemented with distributed denial of service attacks targeted at Air Koryo, the Committee for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries and the Korea Computer Center, three of the most prominent web destinations owned by the state and hosted in North Korea.
“North Korean government is increasingly becoming a threat to peace and freedom. Don’t misunderstand us: As well we disagree with the USA government too [“¦],” reads a comment posted on behalf of Anonymous. “This is not about country vs country – This is about we, the people, the 99% (of USA and of North Korea) vs oppressing and violent regimes (like USA gov. and N.K. gov)! We, the people, are gathering together because we are stronger now and we won’t fight your wars anymore, we won’t eat your shit anymore!!!”
The message posted by Anonymous is highly unlikely to be seen by citizens of North Korea, since Internet access is restricted to a select pool consisting mostly of military and government officials.
