Attack Against Medical Billing Company Medusind Exposes Data of 360,000 People

Leading dental and medical billing provider Medusind recently disclosed a cybersecurity incident impacting the personal data of 360,000 individuals.

Medusind’s security incident

The company suffered a security breach in December 2023. During the attack, perpetrators stole personal and health information from the Miami-based company’s systems.

While Medusind only manages 12 locations in the United States and India, more than 6,000 healthcare providers rely on the company’s revenue cycle management services to maximize revenue and optimize operating costs.

Investigation launched after spotting suspicious activity

In a data breach notification letter filed with the Office of Maine’s Attorney General, the company said it identified the intrusion on Dec. 29, 2023, after investigating suspicious activity on its network.

“On December 29, 2023, Medusind discovered suspicious activity within its IT network,” reads Medusind’s letter. “Upon discovering the suspicious activity, Medusind took the affected systems offline and hired a leading cybersecurity forensic firm to conduct an investigation.”

Several types of personal data exposed to attackers

The company further disclosed that the attack exposed personal and health data of 360,934 individuals, including:

• Personal information: birthdates, email addresses, phone numbers
• Health information: medical history, prescription details, medical record numbers
• Health insurance and billing information: insurance policy numbers, claims information, benefits details
• Payment information: debit and/or credit card numbers, bank account details
• Government identification: Social Security numbers, driver’s licenses, taxpayer IDs, passport numbers

The specific type of information stolen by the attackers depends on the individual.

Medusind is offering affected parties two years of complimentary identity monitoring services, including credit monitoring, identity theft restoration and fraud consultation.
