Google over the last few weeks has been updating Chrome, the world’s most popular web browser, with timely updates meant to plug security flaws that hackers might try to exploit.
October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, an international initiative that educates netizens about online safety and cybercrime.
Bitdefender always recommends Chrome users worldwide install the latest version of the flagship browser to stay safe from potential hacks of unpatched weaknesses.
This October is no exception, with Google rolling out important maintenance updates, the latest plugging security holes tagged “high risk” by the web giant.
If you’re on Chrome 129, you’re already behind on several important bug fixes that might tempt motivated threat actors to exploit your vulnerabilities.
You want to be on Chrome 130 for peace of mind – specifically, as of this post, at versions:
· Chrome 130.0.6723.69/.70 for Windows and macOS
· Chrome 130.0.6723.73 for Android
· Chrome 130.0.6723.78 for iOS
· Chrome 130.0.6723.69 for Linux
The latest updates address a high-risk flaw in the Extensions department (tracked as CVE-2024-10229), and another two in the V8 JavaScript engine (tracked as CVE-2024-10230 and CVE-2024-10231).
Threat actors typically target key components in Chrome to gain a foothold on the victim’s unpatched browser, then try a compromise with malicious code, not least of which spyware – known to be used in targeted attacks.
As a rule of thumb, Bitdefender recommends you deploy security updates for all your devices and software/apps the moment they're available – especially when they address vulnerabilities labelled serious, or potentially exploited by threat actors in the wild.
To make sure you’re on the latest version of your Chrome browser, access Chrome’s Settings, choose About Chrome, let the app fetch the latest update from Google’s servers, then relaunch Chrome.
Chrome automatically finds the latest available version when you relaunch the browser, so the easiest way to stay up to date is to restart every now and then – just be sure to save your work before you do so.
For peace of mind, consider a dedicated security solution for your personal devices.
