England and Wales Cricket Board database is up for grabs following data breach

The notorious and prolific threat actor known as IntelBroker has struck again. According to a listing on the dark web, the hacker got his hands on a database belonging to the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) icoachcriket platform.

Although details of the breach have not been revealed, IntelBroker says he managed to steal the personal information of at least 40,000 users who registered on the platform between 2014 and 2021. Leaked information includes mail addresses, hashed passwords, backup passwords, tokens, and registration information.

The purported database is also available for purchase on the infamous BreachedForums.

While the ECB hasn’t confirmed the threat actor’s claims, users are advised to immediately reset their passwords for their account, as well as any other platforms where they used the same login credentials.

Even though the passwords that were allegedly leaked on the underground forum and marketplace are hashed, it does not mean that cybercriminals can’t use brute-forcing techniques to “guess” them and take over the accounts of data breach victims and inflict crippling financial damage.

That said, internet users everywhere must brush up on the best password practices, including:

• Use strong and one-of-a-kind passwords for every account you own
• Always reset passwords when you are informed of a data breach on platforms you have an account with
• Add any additional layer of security to your online accounts, such as 2FA and MFA
