Guccifer sentenced to 52 months in US prison for leaking Clinton"s emails

Guccifer, the Romanian hacker also known as Marcel Lazar, was sentenced by a federal court in Virginia to 52 months in prison on Thursday for hacking presidential candidate Hillary Clinton”s private server, as well as hacking attacks on former Secretary of State Colin Powell, a US senator, a UN official, the Bush and Rockefeller families and Sidney Blumenthal, the political aide of the Clintons.

The 44 year-old unemployed taxi driver is responsible for top-level security breaches of around 100 victims, including US and Romanian government officials, although he is not a programmer and had no previous computer knowledge at the time of the attacks.

The stolen correspondence and information were leaked online after attacks on the users” email and social media accounts through Russian proxy servers, according Fox News. His activity spanned from 2012 to 2014 and was conducted from his home in Romania.

Once extradited from Romania, Guccifer pleaded guilty to nine counts of federal hacking including identity theft and fraud in May. Before serving the 4-year sentence in the US, Marcel Lazar will have to finish his previous 7-year sentence in Romania.

After Guccifer”s capture, a copycat under the name Guccifer 2.0 launched new attacks and allegedly hacked the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. The identity of the hacker(s) is unknown, but US intelligence agents believe it is a beard for the Russian secret service, Reuters reports.
