Your Stalkers Can Trace Your Steps Through Geo-tagged Tweets and Bing Maps

If you Tweet with geo-location turned on, you can be stalked with the help of Bing Maps and the Twitter Maps App, according to security experts from Attack Research.

Bing Maps enables users to add various apps, enhancing the overall experience. But, by using the Twitter Map app, you can follow specific users across town or cities and retrace their steps.

Just by choosing a specific location and activating the Twitter Maps App from the Map Apps tab, geo-tagged tweets will show up. Looking for specific users based on location or specific keywords is also available, and viewing they`re entire timeline is straightforward.

The search filter also enables looking only for tweets with photos, adding to the pile of personal information that users dump on the internet. Twitter`s support page clearly states that Twitter geo-tagging is off by default, meaning that users must willingly opt-in to use it.

“Tweeting with your location allows you to selectively add location information to your Tweets,” according to Twitter. “This feature is off by default and you will need to opt-in to use it.”

Although Attack Research didn`t speculate on how this information can be exploited by social engineering scams or cyber crooks, geo-stalking through Twitter and Bing Maps is a real possibility.
