The government of the United Kingdom, via the Information Commissioner’s Office (the ICO) has fined Sony a goodly amount, having found that the 2011 PSN hack which exposed customer data was entirely preventable, had quote, software been up to date, unquote.

It is a powerful signal that it is way past time for the IT industry to grow responsible. NDAs and EULAs and restrictive copyright laws should never have been allowed to replace good security and good engineering.
