Some 36 Brits were scammed out of £100 each by malware that posed as police messaging on more than 1,100 computers, according to a press release.
The ransomware was installed on the devices after people accessed infected websites, and caused the PCs to freeze and lock, with a message allegedly coming from the British e-crime Unit, advising users to pay a fine to unlock their computer.
“This is a fraud and users are advised NOT to pay out any monies or hand out any bank details,” Police representatives said. “This scam is now affecting many countries in Europe and further afield, with each email tailored to include the branding of that country’s law enforcement agency.”
UK authorities strongly recommend that users install antivirus software, and “routinely updated to keep pace with new threats as they are discovered.”
Police didn`t make any arrests yet, but their investigations continue to trace those responsible for the malware. Europol are also coordinating with European law enforcement agencies on the same scam.
