FTC Warns of COVID Test Scams: Here’s How You Can Safely Order Test Kits and Avoid Scammers

The US government has resumed offering free COVID test kits to help Americans stay safe, but scammers are taking advantage of this opportunity to defraud consumers.

“Shipping is free, too,” the FTC emphasized, telling users that the only thing they need to provide to receive their tests is their name and shipping address.

“Sharing your email is optional if you’d like to get confirmation and delivery updates from the U.S. Postal Service,” the agency said. “Anyone who asks for more information than that is a scammer. You don’t need to give financial information or pay anything to get these free tests, and nobody can promise you special access or extra tests. If they do, they’re scammers.”

How to Order Free COVID Test Kits

  1. Go to the official Government Website: The only legitimate way to order your free COVID-19 test kits is through the official website: COVIDtests.gov. This site is run by the federal government and provides clear instructions on how to order your tests.
  2. Fill Out Your Information: Once on the site, you'll be asked to enter basic information such as your name and residential address; email is optional. This information is needed to ship the kits to your home. Be sure not to provide other personal details like your Social Security Number or financial information—legitimate government programs won’t ask for this.
  3. No Payment Required: The test kits are completely free. You do not need to provide any payment information. If you're asked for credit card details or other forms of payment, you're not on the official site.
  4. Wait for Delivery: After placing your order, your COVID tests should arrive within a few weeks. Delivery times may vary, especially during periods of high demand.

  • Scrutinize unsolicited emails and texts: Scammers may send emails or texts claiming to offer free test kits or pretending to be from government agencies. These often contain links that lead to phishing websites. Don’t click any links unless you’re sure they are legitimate – Remember, no government agency won’t send unsolicited requests for personal information.
  • Avoid phone callers requesting personal info:  If someone calls you claiming they can help you get free COVID tests but asks for your personal information, it’s likely a scam. The government won’t call you to get your order.
  • Be wary of scam ads on social media: Scammers may post fraudulent ads on social media to lure unsuspecting users to phishing websites or forms. Be cautious about clicking on ads offering free COVID tests. Always verify that you’re ordering from the correct government-run website.
