Hackers Breach Marina Bay Sands to Steal Customer Phone Numbers, Other Records

The luxurious Singapore resort Marina Bay Sands has issued a data breach notice telling customers that cybercriminals stole their personal information, including phone numbers, full names, and more.

Marina Bay Sands touts itself as Asia’s leading business, leisure and entertainment destination. It features Singapore’s largest hotel, with over 2,200 luxurious rooms and suites. Its stunning architecture and facilities make it a world-class destination for clients with deep pockets.

In a notice published this week on its website, the company reveals hackers accessed its servers last month, making off with customer data.

“Marina Bay Sands became aware of a data security incident on 20 October 2023 involving unauthorized third-party access on 19 and 20 October 2023 to some of our customers’ loyalty programme membership data,” reads the memo.

According to investigators, the intruder accessed 665,000 customer records, including names, email addresses, phone numbers, country of residence, and membership number and tier. The hotel says members of its casino rewards program weren’t affected.

The resort’s management is now busy investigating the matter with cybersecurity experts and promises to strengthen its cybersecurity.

Sands LifeStyle loyalty program members will soon receive individual notices about the breach, hopefully with instructions on how to thwart attempts at fraud and phishing attacks that typically leverage the type of data compromised in this instance.

If you’ve done business with Marina Bay Sands, look out for unsolicited communications via SMS or email in the coming weeks and months, and don’t divulge any personal or financial information.
