The online job market has become a hunting ground for scammers who prey on hopeful job seekers.
The US Federal Trade Commission last year said that losses to job scams more than tripled from 2020 to 2023 and, in just the first half of 2024, topped $220 million.
This year, the FTC announced that, overall, Americans lost a whopping $12.5 billion to fraudsters in the full year of 2024 – up $2.5 billion from 2023. According to the alert, job scams were the third-most-reported type of swindle, costing Americans more than $750 million, or an average of $2,250 per victim.
2025 likely stands to mark an even starker increase in damage due to job scams. So it’s essential to stay vigilant. Here are 10 warning signs to help you spot a fake job offer before it’s too late.
Be wary if an employer contacts you out of the blue. A common red flag is when the recruiter reaches out first about a job you never applied for. According to the Better Business Bureau, 80% of job scam victims report that the scammer initiated contact, often via job boards or social media. Scammers might claim they “found your resume online” and immediately make you feel special, saying you’ve already made the first cut for the role.
Legitimate companies rarely offer jobs to candidates who haven’t even applied. Unsolicited job offers should put you on guard.
Getting a job offer on the spot – without a formal interview or after only a brief chat – is a major warning sign. Scammers often “fast-track” the hiring process to lock you in before you can spot inconsistencies. They may skip a real interview entirely or conduct a fake one over text-only chat.
In reality, no reputable company will hire you without at least a conversation (usually a phone or video interview). If someone tries to hire you after a mere introduction or only via WhatsApp, it’s likely a scam. Legitimate employers take time to vet candidates.
Scammers sometimes dangle unrealistically high pay to lure victims. “Too good to be true” compensation is a classic bait used in fake job offers. If a posting advertises a salary far above market rate for the role or your experience level, be suspicious. An entry-level position promising $75,000 a year for only 15 hours of work per week is a big red flag.
Always cross-check the salary range on genuine job platforms like Indeed, Glassdoor, or PayScale. If the pay is unusually high, especially for minimal work, it’s probably a scam. Remember the old adage: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
While many real jobs today offer flexibility, beware of roles that seem overly easy on hours. If a job promises to let you work whenever and wherever you want, or only one or two days a week, and still earn a hefty income, something’s off. Scammers often pair claims of extreme flexibility with high pay to create an irresistible offer.
Legitimate remote or flexible jobs still have some structure and reasonable expectations. Always question a job that requires almost no time or effort for disproportionate reward.
Real employers typically provide specific details about job duties and the qualifications needed. In contrast, fake job listings are often very vague. If the job description is just a few lines and the requirements are ridiculously simple (e.g. “Must be 18, have internet access”) – basically criteria almost anyone can meet – it’s a red flag.
Scammers keep descriptions broad to attract more victims. You might also notice that the “recruiter” dodges any requests for more details about the role or insists “Don’t worry, we’ll train you.”
A legitimate job posting spells out duties, required skills or experience, and provides additional context, such as company background. If those specifics are missing, be cautious.
The FBI recently issued a public warning that fraudsters are offering fake work-from-home jobs, typically involving a simple task, such as rating restaurants or “optimizing” a service. Posing as a recruiting agency, the scammers typically contact victims by text or phone.
“Scammers design the fake job to have a confusing compensation structure that requires victims to make cryptocurrency payments in order to earn more money or ‘unlock’ work, and the payments go directly to the scammer,” the bureau says.
Any “job” that requires you to pay them is almost certainly a scam. You should never have to pay to get hired. Common scenarios include being told you need to pay for training materials, certification, a background check, or even to buy equipment up front. Scammers might say they’ll send you a laptop for work but you must wire money for special software first – then they take the money and vanish.
Another ploy is the fake check scam: they send you a check (for your first paycheck or equipment purchases, for example), ask you to deposit it and then wire a portion back. The check later bounces, and you’ve lost the money you sent.
As we previously mentioned on this blog, the only item you should ever pay for when getting a job is your bus ticket or cab ride to the interview.
Be cautious of job listings that sound like get-rich-quick schemes. Phrases like “earn thousands in your first month,” or other extravagant promises are major warning signs.
Scammers know people dream big, so they conjure up visions of rapid success or even passive income. Often, these turn out to be pyramid schemes or shady multi-level marketing setups in disguise. If the role heavily emphasizes making money very quickly or recruiting other people under you (rather than actually doing work), it’s not a legitimate job.
Legitimate jobs have realistic earning timelines and clearly defined pay structures. If the recruiter can’t plainly explain how you’ll be paid, or if the plan sounds like “magic money,” steer clear.
Pay attention to the tone and quality of the communications. Poor grammar, strange syntax, or overly casual messages from a supposed employer are clear warning signs
Fraudsters often operate from overseas, so their English may be awkward. Of course, not every typo is a sign of a scam, but multiple blatant errors or an unprofessional style in official job communications are a red flag.
Real companies usually communicate in a professional manner. When in doubt, verify the recruiter’s identity and the company’s contacts through independent means.
If an email or listing doesn’t include a company address, phone number, or website, be suspicious. A legitimate job offer will come with verifiable contact information for the company and recruiter.
Many scam emails come from personal email accounts (like @gmail.com or @yahoo.com) instead of an official company domain. If you get an email from “Hiring Manager” at Gmail, you’re probably talking to a scammer. Even if the “recruiter” uses a legitimate-looking company email like [name]@[company].com, it can still be a scam, as email addresses are easily spoofed.
Use the web and research the company:
· Do they have a real website?
· Are they who they say they are?
· Has anyone else reported a suspicious interaction with that person or entity?
If you can’t find any solid information about the employer’s existence, assume it’s fraudulent and move on.
Be extremely wary if you’re asked to provide sensitive personal information before you’re officially hired. Scammers posing as employers might request your Social Security Number, driver’s license, bank account details for “direct deposit,” or other confidential data during the application or “interview” phase.
In reality, legitimate employers won’t ask for your SSN, ID scans, or bank info until after you’re hired and doing HR paperwork. This kind of info can be used for identity theft, so guard it carefully. If a recruiter pushes for your private data or any account information early on, it’s a scam.
Job scams are more prevalent than ever. Stay alert to these warning signs and always trust your instincts!
· If something feels off or “too good to be true,” take a step back and investigate. Don’t let anyone pressure you into a hasty decision.
· Do your homework on every job opportunity: verify the company’s legitimacy, double-check contacts, and never send money or sensitive info to an unverified party.
· Use reputable job sites and communication channels to add a layer of safety.
· If you suspect a scam, cut off contact immediately and report it to the FTC, or local authorities, to help warn others.
