Twitter Aims for User Safety Via Mass Blocking

Twitter has introduced a feature that makes blocking multiple accounts easier as it works on additional user controls to boost security, according to the company.

All Twitter users will be able to use the security settings in coming weeks.

Twitter has already released mute, block and report features to improve user experience, but increasing volumes of unwanted interactions on Twitter required more sophisticated tools.

Users can now export and share block lists with people who face similar issues or import another user`s list into their accounts and block multiple accounts at once instead of blocking them individually.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Twitter`s (now outgoing) CEO Dick Costolo believed his company “sucks at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform, and we`ve sucked at it for years.”

Here`s how the new features work.

To export a block list:

  1. Navigate to your blocked account settings on twitter.com.
  2. At the top of your block list, clickAll to export your full block list. Click Imported to export the block list(s) you have imported.
  3. Click theAdvanced options drop-down menu.
  4. SelectExport your list.
  5. Confirm the accounts you want to export.
  6. ClickExport and a .csv file will be downloaded to your computer and you can share the file with other Twitter users. If your block list exceeds 5,000 accounts, your list will be separated into multiple files.

To import a block list:

  1. Make sure the file shared with you is a .csv file and save it to your computer.
  2. Navigate to your blocked account settings on twitter.com.
  3. Click theAdvanced options drop-down menu.
  4. SelectImport a list.
  5. In the pop-up, click on the paperclip icon and find the .csv file. ClickOpen to import the list.
  6. The file name will be displayed when the file has been successfully imported.
  7. Click The list of the accounts will be displayed. You can uncheck any accounts you do not wish to block (accounts that you currently follow will be automatically unchecked).
  8. ClickBlock to confirm.
  9. The imported accounts will be added to your block list.

To manage a block list:

At the top of your block list, you`ll see the option to click All or Imported.

  • ClickAll to see every account you are currently blocking.
  • ClickImported to see the accounts you blocked after importing another user`s list.

To unblock users:

Click the Blocked button next to the account you`d like to unblock (the button will read Unblocked when you hover over it).

Last December, Twitter launched the blocked accounts settings page with features that stop blocked users from viewing profiles. In April, Twitter announced more changes regarding cyberbullying.
