Two teenagers UK police arrested last week have been released on bail and are accused of membership in the infamous Lapsus$ hacking group.
Lapsus$ made a name by hacking numerous large companies and posting stolen classified data online. For the most part, they seem to be able to penetrate the defenses of so many companies by using credentials bought from the darknet, leaked through data breaches or by using social engineering tactics to trick employees.
Although the teens were arrested in connection with the Lapsus$ group, police have said nothing about the hacking group. BBC made the connection between the arrests and Lapsus$. The main reason there’s so little information about the case is the age of the teenagers. Because both of them are minors, details about them won’t reach the public, and the media can’t reveal any personal information.
“The City of London Police has been conducting an investigation into members of a hacking group,” said Detective Inspector Michael O'Sullivan from the City of London Police. “Two teenagers, a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old, have been charged in connection with this investigation and remain in police custody.”
“Both teenagers have been charged with: three counts of unauthorised access to a computer with intent to impair the reliability of data; one count of fraud by false representation and one count of unauthorised access to a computer with intent to hinder access to data. The 16-year-old has also been charged with one count of causing a computer to perform a function to secure unauthorised access to a program,” he added.
The exact status of the two teenagers in the organization is not clear, but it is clear that there are many others. The group resurfaced after the initial arrests and hit another company in the meantime. Bleeping Computer reportedthat the two teenagers had been released on bail.
